be in it to win it

You’ve got to be in it to win it.

Now there’s a phrase that can be taken the wrong way!

On the one hand, yes you have to be visible and be in ‘it’ (where ‘it’ is your ideal clients’ radar) to get noticed. On the other hand if you read ‘it’ as being ‘everywhere’ then that’s a recipe for marketing overwhelm if ever I saw it!

Marketing overwhelm is a common affliction. It often goes hand in hand with ‘really busy but not getting much done’ syndrome and ‘seriously long to do list’ condition. And the ‘in it to win it’ philosophy can be to blame. In a world where new options for marketing, and media increases every day its not hard to see that if you try and be ‘in’ everything so you can win (new clients and business opportunities) you might lose more often than you win. Spreading yourself thin is not a good marketing approach.

It’s exhausting trying to do everything (I know, stating the obvious, right?). But so many business owners go into overdrive and try and be everywhere, doing every type of marketing they can, and often not getting anywhere with huge success.

Let me tell you a little secret. You can do really well only using 2 or 3 marketing approaches or media. (Shh. don’t tell all those busy people – they will get cross!). If you focus on the media YOU like AND your ideal clients engage with you can do very well thank you very much.

If you love to write then a blog, some articles and well placed PR (or a book) can get you a very long way. If you like to speak then get on stages, speak on radio shows and record your own audios (as a podcast or just MP3 downloads) and you can use this to get you noticed. If you like to make videos, get really good at that. If you are great at interacting with people get on social media – share and have conversations.

But don’t think you have to be ‘in’ everything to ‘win’. You don’t. Be smart, be selective, and be in the ‘it’ that you and your ideal clients love in terms of media and marketing. you’ll have a much better chance at winning.
