New lottery office opens in Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) – A new lottery office opened in Savannah on Tuesday and officials say the number of people buying lottery tickets lately is on the rise.
It seems pretty contradictory. The housing market is in a slump. People are losing their homes, their cars and can’t pay their bills, but they’re still buying lottery tickets. In fact, according to the Georgia Lottery Corporation, they’ve had another record year, doing $3.5 billion in sales statewide. In Chatham County alone, they did $1.2 billion in sales.
We caught up with Georgia Lottery Corporation president and CEO, Margaret DeFrancisco as she cut the ribbon on a new district office on Little Neck Road on the southside of Savannah. Here, people can buy lottery tickets and claim prizes.
She believes even though the cost of groceries and gas are increasing, people are still using their extra money to buy tickets.
She thinks she knows why people continue to buy tickets. The Georgia Lottery is always offering new games and bigger jackpots and prizes and the lottery benefits students statewide.
“Because of the Hope Scholarship and pre-kindergarten program, people know when they play the lottery, even if they don’t win, that their money is going to a good cause. We know that keeps our sales bolstered,” she explained.
