The likelihood of being picked is very low. However, if you are picked it is an easy way to gain a Green Card.

Please note that you have until 12 noon (Eastern Time) on November 10, 2020 to apply. If you wish to apply and are eligible probably best not to leave it until the last minute.

This year’s US green card lottery opened to applicants on October 7, 2020 and will continue accepting applications up until the 12 noon deadline (Eastern Time) on 10 November 2020. Despite Trump’s efforts to scrap the green card lottery – also known as the diversity visa lottery – US entry is still open to those from countries with low migrant numbers in America.

According to the Department of State website, citizens of all countries can apply for the US green card lottery, except the following:

  • Bangladesh
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • China (including Hong Kong SAR)
  • Colombia
  • Dominican Republic
  • El Salvador
  • Guatemala
  • Haiti
  • Honduras
  • India
  • Jamaica
  • Mexico
  • Nigeria
  • Pakistan
  • Philippines
  • South Korea
  • United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories
  • Vietnam

Nigeria the only African nation excluded

Nigeria became the latest country to be excluded from the US green card lottery after the number of Nigerian migrants in the US exceeded the maximum of 50,000, and is the only African nation not to be included.

However, people born in Macau SAR and Taiwan are eligible for this year’s green card lottery. Under the rules of the diversity visa, people born in ineligible countries can apply using a spouse’s country of birth. Equally, if neither of an applicant’s parents were born in an ineligible country, people can qualify using the country of birth of their parents.

Qualifying criteria

To qualify for the US green card lottery, a person must:

  • Be born in a qualifying country or be eligible by claiming a parent or spouse’s country that’s not on the exclusion list
  • Meet educational and work experience criteria by having a minimum of a high school education or two years of equivalent work experience within the past five years. This must be in an occupation that requires at least two years of qualifying training or experience

Under green card lottery rules, each applicant is allowed to submit one entry only. Those applying more than once will be disqualified.

New qualifying criteria added

This year’s lottery has had a new qualification added, which requires the primary applicant to have a valid passport at the time of applying for entry into the lottery.

There is no fee to apply for the lottery and applications must be made online. Once an application is submitted, entrants will receive a confirmation number. The number allows applicants to check the status of their entry via the Department of State website from May 8, 2021.

No other official notification will be provided as the program does not issue emails or letters.

The US green card lottery is open to applicants until November 10, 2020. Find out if you’re eligible and apply today. More information, here.

American culture enjoys influences from a variety of places including European and Latin American countries. In fact, many of the traditional American foods that might spring to mind today actually came from somewhere else. Pizza is one example of an imported dish that came into its own in the United States. Italian immigrants brought their grandmother’s recipes with them when they started to arrive over two hundred years ago. Now the thin crust Napoles style pizzas have been reinvented to become the more aptly named Chicago pizza pie. Layers of cheese, tomato sauce, and toppings are doubled or even tripled in this American version of the classic.

Stereotypes have been driven by experience, with one popular documentary charting the rising size of waist belts in relation to the supersizing of fast food portions. In response, leaders of a number of states including the city of New York have successfully campaigned against the sale of extra-large fizzy drinks and portions.

If you like to dream big, you may have already considered applying for the green card lottery. Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a deadline for green card lottery applications?

Every year the DV lottery opens for less than a month. At this time, anyone from an eligible country has the chance to apply. This year, the timeframe to apply runs from October 7 to November 10. If you apply before or after these dates your application will be automatically invalid.

Who is eligible to apply for the Green Card Lottery?

The aim of the green card lottery is to provide greater variety in the melting pot culture that has represented the USA since its inception. Nationals of Bangladesh, Brazil, Canada, China (mainland born), Colombia, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, India, Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria, Pakistan, Philippines, South Korea, United Kingdom (except Northern Ireland) and its dependent territories, and Vietnam are sadly not eligible to apply this year. Even if you’re from one of these countries, you still have a chance to enter if your partner is from an eligible nation.

What’s the latest I can apply for the Green Card Lottery?

The green card lottery isn’t open all year round. Every year, there’s a limited time frame within which you can submit your application. This year, the application process opened on October 7. The draw will close on November 10, so although you still have a couple of weeks left, we recommend that you don’t delay as the rules are strict. Once your application has been submitted by the deadline, the next important date is on 8 May when the list of winner’s numbers is published online.

How many times can I enter the green card lottery?

Each eligible person can apply to enter the DV lottery once per year. We suggest that you keep your odds high by applying once only. Your chances will be significantly reduced if you apply more than once because the system automatically voids all applications that are found to be duplicated. If you want to increase your opportunities to win, you’ll be pleased to know that every individual in a family can apply, so both you and your partner are in with a chance.
