About the Washington Capitals

Washington Capitals Tickets

They say slow and steady wins the race, and few NHL teams are better proof than the Washington Capitals. After joining the NHL as an expansion team in 1974, it’s been a long but worthwhile journey to the top of the heap. They started from the bottom but have ultimately become one of the NHL’s most elite teams, culminating with a Stanley Cup Trophy win in 2018.

Typical Problems

The Capitals are a classic example of an expansion franchise that had trouble competing right off the bat. Washington failed to qualify for the playoffs in their first eight seasons, typically finishing last in their division. Luckily, those dark days wouldn’t last forever. Beginning with the 1982-83 season, the Capitals reached the playoffs for 14 consecutive years. Playoff series wins were hard to come by during that stretch, as Washington only reached the Conference Finals once and never made the Stanley Cup Finals. But those seasons allowed the Capitals to break their reputation as perennial doormats.

The Next Level

Washington’s 14-year playoff streak was snapped in 1997. But the Capitals followed it up the next year by reaching the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history, though they were swept by the Red Wings in the Finals. In 2001, they traded for star Jaromir Jagr and gave him the largest contract in NHL history at the time, sending a message to the rest of the league that they were serious about winning.

To be fair, the addition of Jagr didn’t exactly work out, and the Capitals experienced mixed results for a number of years. Undeterred, the team rose to prominence during the 2007-08 season, which began a stretch of nine division titles in a 12-year span. Along the way, the Capitals won Presidents’ Trophies in 2010, 2016, and 2017. They finally found their breakthrough during the 2018 Stanley Cup Playoffs, winning a conference championship for just the second time in franchise history and winning the Stanley Cup to complete their journey to the top.

Capital One Arena – Washington

Love going to Capitals games, the atmosphere, the arena, and the games are always a blast! Thank you Washington Capitals for being an amazing franchise and taking care of us the fans!

Great game, but the Pens lost.

Capital One Arena – Washington

The best part is how great the staff at the Capitol One Arena really are. I am a Penguin’s fan and I also happen to use a wheelchair and the staff at the arena from the parking garage to the security folks to the ticket takers all the way to the ushers are simply amazing and I have never encountered one with out a smile on their faces. Its a true joy to go to events there.

Great view, lousy food choices

Capital One Arena – Washington

Our seats were 2nd level front row which gave use awesome views, but food choices on level 2 are horrible and ridiculously expensive. $10 for a soda! Souvenir cup came with it, but I would say it’s worth 50 cents. much cheaper quality than they used to be.

1st hockey game

Capital One Arena – Washington

We are Pens fans so I was worried about the Caps fans being obnoxious, but there were almost the same amount of Pens fans there. It was super fun and exciting.

C-A-P-S CAPS CAPS CAPS

Capital One Arena – Washington

Got the tickets for my dad for Christmas. Taking the Metro into Gallery Place from Greenbelt is always easy. Getting into and out of Cap One Arena is easy, beautiful interior, and just everything about the gameday experience is great!

Had a great time every thing went smoothly at the venue.

Capital One Arena – Washington

I was able to attend my first Washington Capitals game at the Verizon Center. It was a great experience and I plan to attend again. The Capital fans were great and the atmosphere was remarkable.

Capital One Arena – Washington

Good game, although Caps lost. Very easy to enter using cell phone tickets. Attendants were very friendly and did not make us show our tickets (cell phone) each time we returned to seat. Bathroom lines were very long during intermissions, which was increased by one of the men’s rooms being cleaned/fixed during first intermission. Good seats. Will be going back.

Great seats, great venue, great game!

Capital One Arena – Washington

The entire experience was great. Coming into the arena was easy, everyone was knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly. The seats were great, there was always staff there to make sure we were not thirsty or hungry. It was fast and easy to transact. The Etihad Lounge was fantastic. The only downside to the day was that the Caps lost, but hey, we’ll get them next time.

Capital One Arena – Washington

Game itself was good. The venue show was horrible, a definite mood killer. They need to experience what other venues are providing.

Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena

The Washington Capitals won the franchise’s first Stanley Cup® Championship in 2017-18 and made it back to the Playoffs in 2018-19. With the team’s top players returning, fans will continue to flock to the District and Capital One Arena. The season begins at the St. Louis Blues on Oct. 2.

Washington Capitals 2019-20 Season

In 2018-19, the Capitals finished first in the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division with a record of 48-26-8 but lost in the first round of the Playoffs. Led by franchise scoring leader and captain Alex Ovechkin and new head coach Todd Reirden, the Caps defended their division title.

Ovechkin finished the regular season with 89 points and a league-leading 51 goals, with fellow Russian Evgeny Kuznetsov tallying 72 points. Those two, along with key contributors John Carlson, Nicklas Backstrom, Michal Kempny, and goaltender Braden Holtby, are among the returnees for the 2019-20 campaign.

Washington Capitals History

The Capitals were founded in 1974, but did not post a winning record or reach the Playoffs until the 1982-83 season, when a group led by top scorers Dennis Maruk and Mike Gartner, along with defenseman Rod Langway, ended the frustration. It began a remarkable streak of 14 consecutive seasons in the Playoffs.

After that streak ended in 1996-97, the Capitals bounced back the next year to win their first conference title. Led by right wing Peter Bondra and goalie Olaf Kolzig, they defeated Boston, Ottawa, and Buffalo in the Playoffs to earn their first berth in the Stanley Cup® Finals. But the Caps were swept in four games.

Ovechkin arrived in 2005, and since 2007-08, the Capitals have reached the Playoffs in every year but one. The 2014-15 season began a run of three consecutive years that the Capitals reached the second round, only to lose in heartbreaking fashion. In 2015–16, they won a franchise-high and NHL-best 56 games only to be felled by Pittsburgh, all the losses coming by one goal. They won a league-best 55 games the next year, but again lost to the Penguins in the second round.

Along with Gartner and Langway, Yvon Labre and Dale Hunter have had their numbers retired.
