Waterford woman was living paycheck to paycheck, now a lottery millionaire

Cristi Davis won’t have to worry about living paycheck to paycheck anymore.

The 40-year-old Waterford woman is now a millionaire thanks to the winning lottery ticket she bought in February.

Davis says she purchased a Powerball Ticket and a Mega Millions scratch-off ticket from Huron Plaza Liquor in Pontiac. But it was the Powerball ticket that turned out to be the winner.

The next morning, while at work, Davis’ friend called her on FaceTime. They showed Davis the winning numbers of the $70 million jackpot — 14 47 54 55 68. She recalls that after she confirmed the numbers were the same as hers, all she could do was scream.

According to a news release Wednesday from the Michigan Lottery, Davis decided to take a lump sum of $50 million instead of receiving the full $70 million as 30 regular payments. After tax withholdings, she received around $36 million, the release said.

“Winning has caused me to feel overwhelmed, grateful, and relieved all at once,” Davis was quoted as saying in the news release. “I won’t have to live paycheck-to-paycheck any more.”

Davis plans to use her winnings to purchase a new house and car. She intends to invest the remainder. She says she is hopeful that with her earnings, she, her children, and her grandchildren will live comfortably for the rest of their lives.

Cristy Davis marks the fifth Michigan resident to win the Powerball jackpot since it was first offered in the state in 2010, according to Michigan Lottery.

The woman said she does not yet have plans for her winnings, but she doesn’t expect to quit working.
